IDW have released their solicitations for May, which include two new Star Trek stories, which oddly will find bother timeline's versions of Kirk and company on missions in the Delta Quadrant! Continue below for all the details.

New Visions #6: Resistance
By John Byrne
One word: Borg!
Yup, that is surely the shortest blurb ever! You can see the first couple of pages of this issue in one of my previous reports. Here's the updated cover (compare to the version Byrne previously teased):

Star Trek (nuTrek ongoing) #45: Eurydice, Part 3
Written by Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen
“Eurydice, Part 3 of 3.” Trapped deep in the Delta Quadrant, Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise fight for their lives to escape the clutches of the Dark Market syndicate! Don't miss this all-new adventure produced in association with STAR TREK writer/producer Roberto Orci!
There are two covers for this one, the regular by Joe Corroney (which features an intriguing quantity of Vulcan stuff), and the subscription variant photo-cover:

Latest Star Trek DVD and bluray releases

There are several new Star Trek home video releases out now or coming soon. Continue below for details on them all.

The mot genuinely "new" release is compilation of TOS episodes on DVD, Captain Kirk's Boldest Missions, which is due out next month. StarTrek.com have confirmed the eight episodes which will be included on this two-disc release, which will be: The Corbomite Maneuver, The Conscience of the King, Balance of Terror, Space Seed, The City on the Edge of Forever, Mirror, Mirror, The Doomsday Machine, and Return to Tomorrow.

There will also be several extra features: An introduction by William Shatner and Joan Collins (presumable just for City on the Edge of Forever), and featuretters: What Makes a Good Captain, The Importance of the Captain's Log, and Captain Kirk's Legacy. All of these were included on the Fan Collective: Captain's Log from way back in 2001!

Meanwhile in the UK, May will see the release of Star Trek: Enterprise - The Full Journey, the complete series boxset on bluray. This release uses the same style of packaging as the other European full series sets, but of course Enterprise wasn't available in bluray when those sets were first released a few years ago, so it's catching up now. While this is a UK release, the discs should be region free, so if you want the full series in one box it's an option wherever you are in the world, if you can get hold of it.

Like the above Enterprise release, Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Full Journey also got the bluray upgrade in the UK last year. And now it's showing up in other European markets. The Spanish edition was released in December, and the German version is due out in April. Aside from switching the text to the relevant local languages these are the same as the UK versions it appears.

And finally, Germany has also recently had new editions of both nuTrek films on bluray, repacks of the films in novobox packaging (which is similar to steelbooks, but made by another company). The first film reuses a cover design first seen on a Japanese release a couple of years ago, while Into Darkness gets a new cover design in the same style.

Books bits: Armageddon, Wit, and more

There have been several new covers for forthcoming Star Trek books released recently, plus some other bits of books news, which you'll find below.

First up an exciting new cover for Dayton Ward's TNG novel, Armageddon's Arrow. The cover art is by Doug Drexler, with a spacey background from Ali Ries.Via StarTrek.com:

Armageddon's Arrow, due out in June, will see the USS Enterprise-E embarking on it's new mission of exploration. Here's the blurb:
It is a new age of exploration, and the U.S.S. Enterprise is dispatched to “the Odyssean Pass,” a region charted only by unmanned probes and believed to contain numerous inhabited worlds. Approaching a star system with two such planets, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew find a massive alien vessel, drifting in interstellar space for decades. Sensors detect life aboard the derelict—aliens held in suspended animation.

Thought to be an immense sleeper ship, the vessel actually is a weapon capable of destroying entire worlds . . . the final gambit in a war that has raged for generations across the nearby system. Now caught in the middle of this conflict, Captain Picard attempts to mediate, as both sides want this doomsday weapon . . . which was sent from the future with the sole purpose of ending the interplanetary war before it even began!

More books news after the jump:

Also coming in June is Robb Pearlman's The Wit and Wisdom of Star Trek, and StarTrek.com have recently revealed the cover for that too:

The ultimate gift book for Trekkies, featuring classic quotes and photos from fan-loved moments, tidbits of behind-the-scenes trivia, and personal recollections from the cast and crew of Star Trek The Original Series.

The Wit and Wisdom of Star Trek celebrates the enduring legacy of The Original Series, with full-color photos, notable production facts, evocative excerpts, and quotes directly from the cast and crew. From love and inclusion, to humor, to exploration, The Wit and Wisdom of Star Trek lives up to the mission of Star Trek itself: to inspire as well as entertain!

Over in Germany, Cross Cult have posted their cover for David R. George III's first book in The Fall series, Revelation and Dust. The German title will be Erkenntnisse aus Ruinen, and aside from that, the cover is the same as the US edition, whcih is another Doug Drexler design. This book will be released in September.

Cross Cult have also recently announced they will be issuing printed omnibus books of the Corps of Engineers novellas, which they have been releasing as ebooks. The first of two omnibuses so far announced will be coming in November. Each book will collect four novellas, and feature new cover art. They will also be limited to single print run of two-thousand copies each. Thanks to Unreality SF's Jen Deffner for alerting me about these.

Cross Cult have now also listed some more of the German titles for Corps of Engineers ebooks due out this year and next:

Finally, there have been several author interviews recently, regarding the latest book releases. Check out Trek FM's Literary Treks and Visionary Treks' The Captain's Table to hear Una McCormack discuss her new DS9 novel, The Missing. And head to StarTrek.com for John Jackson Miller on his TNG/Aventine/Titan tale, Takedown. Alas both authors weren't able to confirm any more Star Trek books from them just yet.

Several models in the The Official Starships Collection have been previewed recently, plus there are hints of more to come. Continue below to check out all the latest from the series:

The latest issues to be officially solicited are the USS Enterprise-C, and Negh'Var class, issues forty-six and forty-seven, which will be arriving in the UK in June, with the rest of the world to follow. The new listings for these on online retailers include new photos of the models:

A new image of issue forty-four, the Intrepid, has also been released byThe Collection's Twitter:

While in an email update to subscribers, Eaglemoss have revealed the fourth special issue in the series, the D4 class Bird of Prey, will be released at the beginning of April. The email also gives u the first look at the cover of the magazine, and one of the interior spreads:

Meanwhile there are several hints at models to come, thanks to Douglas E Graves, who shared his latest model on Facebook, when Doug Drexler shared these images of the Romulan shuttle, he mentioned it is destined for use in the Eaglemoss collection. Graves also noted he will be producing models of the Romulan Bird of Prey, Deep Space Station K-7, and the TAS cargo drone. He didn't state these are for use in The Collection, but they are all models that have been hinted at previously... While mulling over those prospects, do check out Graves' full gallery on Facebook for more views of the Romulan shuttle.

Finally, another lucky competition winner has received their customised ship, and shared images of it on Facebook. Like the other winner I mentioned in my last update on the series, Deshka Darkstorm‎ was also sent a prototype of another model in The Collection, this time the ablative armor Voyager.

For a listing of all the ships in the Starships Collection, including links to all my previous previews and reviews, see my index page.

Also, don't forget, if you're a fan of the USS Titan, and want to see that Luna class ship included in The Collection, make sure you sign up to the petition. Once we get five-thousand people who pledge to pre-order Eaglemoss will be able to make one! We're well over 60% of the way there now!

Salute Nimoy

$

As I am sure you must now be aware, earlier today, the sad news came of the death of Leonard Nimoy. Perhaps not unexpected, given reports of ill health earlier this week, and a respectable age of eight-three, it was no less shocking and upsetting to hear.

The character of Spock is the thread that runs through the entire Star Trek franchise, from the pilot episode all the way through to the most recent movie, and of course he will live on in Zachary Quinto, and I'm sure others in years to come. Personally, Spock is one of the most influential characters in the franchise, a role model, who's sense of logic I have always found inspiring. In playing Spock, Leonard Nimoy has been a huge influence on my own life.

Being so plugged in to the online Star Trek community I have found it deeply moving to see the overwhelming outpouring of sadness, and celebration of the life, of one of the most important people in all Star Trek history. Throughout the day I've been coming back to social media to see everything ranging from quotes and iconic images, to incredibly thoughtful and sad musings and artwork. All manner of Star Trek fans, celebrities, Nimoy's family, friends, and colleagues, and the mainstream media have all poured out their grief; it's been incredible.

One image one of my friends shared on Facebook really moved me, simply of her friends all gathered round to salute Leonard Nimoy in the traditional Vulcan fashion. And then the group mind of Twitter had the same thought, and this happened:

That image is made from hundreds of people around the world, marking the passing of Leonard Nimoy. Check the #SaluteNimoy hashtag on Twitter, more and more people keep flooding in.

Of course there is a lot more to Mr Nimoy than Spock, I refer you to the New York Times' excellent eulogy to find out more about his life.

Trekkies of the world are a fickle bunch, but I'm sure we all stand united in grief today. Mr Nimoy did indeed live long and prosper, and will live on forever, as one of the greatest characters in all film and television.

Spock's Memorium, in the latest issue of New Visions

Out this week is the fifth issue of John Byrne's New Visionsphoto-comic series. The main story in this issue is A Scent of Ghosts, which guest stars Number One, now a Commodore, in a story set before Byrne's previous adventures featuring her in his Romulan saga. However, as is customary in the series, there is also a short secondary story in the book, and in a remarkable quirk of timing, this Motion Picture era tale features Spock, pondering the passing of an associate. Here's a sneak peak at the first page of Memorium:

Of course John Byrne could not possibly have known this story would come so close to the death of Leonard Nimoy when he created this story weeks or months ago - In fact the story marks the passing of another Star Trek actor late last year (but I won't spoil who). But it seems it has come with perfect and poignant timing as we all make our own memorials, in thoughts, words, and pictures, to the passing of one of the most significant figures in Star Trek history.

Check back tomorrow for a full preview of the feature story from this issue, as well as the other Star Trek comic release this week, the third issue in the Planet of the Apes crossover series.

Out this week is the third issue in The Primate Directive, the five-part TOS/Planet of the Apes crossover comic series. Continue after the jump for a five page preview from this issue, plus news of the series omnibus book, and some more Trek/Apes artwork.

You can continue reading this story by picking up a copy at your local comic book shop, or from online retails like these: Things From Another World, Forbidden Planet, iTunes.

Or, if you can wait until July, you can get the complete story in the omnibus book, which has now been listed on Amazon. The cover currently assigned to it follows standard IDW procedure and reuses the artwork from the first issue. Here's the blurb:
STAR TREK: The hope for the best of mankind's future! PLANET OF THE APES: A chilling look at the fall of humanity! How could these worlds possibly collide? What could possibly cause Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise to side with Dr. Zaius to protect Ape City? And what does Colonel George Taylor have to say about it?

Finally, J.K. Woodward, who will be providing variant covers for the final two issues in the series, has shared another piece of art related to the crossover. Alas this amazing illustration will not be another cover, but was instead a bespoke commission for one of the series co-writers, Scott Tipton. You can see in-progress images on how Woodward created the image on his Tumblr.

Out this week is the fifth issue of John Byrne's New Visionsphoto-comic series, A Scent of Ghosts, a story which features both the Pike and Kirk era crews of the Enterprise, with Number One appearing in both sides of the story, in something of a prequel to her role in Byrne's previous Romulan saga.

There is also a short secondary story Memorium, which with amazing time seeing Spock contemplating mortality, in the Motion Picture era - I posted a preview of that story earlier in the week, and continue below for a four page preview of the man story in this issue, as well as news of the next omnibus book, and the latest behind the scenes previews from the series:

You can continue reading this story by picking up a copy at your local comic book shop, or from online retails like these: Amazon.com, Things From Another World, Forbidden Planet, iTunes

The two stories in this issue will also be printed again in June, in the second omnibus book in the New Visions series. It will contain issues three to five, and according to the blurb from Amazon an extra six-page story! Here's the new cover and blurb:

John Byrne presents all-new, feature-length tales set in the Star Trek: The Original Series universe, done in a unique, photomontage style. Collects the stories "Cry Vengeance,""Made Out of Mudd,""A Scent of Ghosts,""Memorium," and a new six-page short story.

Finally, Byrne regularly posts work in progress previews of his work on the series on his own forums. Here are a couple of shots of new virtual sets he has been working on, you can see more views and previews looking back through his forum posts.

New from DST: A well armed Worf, and the USS Excelsior

$

The fourth figure in Diamond Select Toys Star Trek Select range, Worf, is currently finding his way to retailers, and to mark the release DST has releaseda collection of images to show off this TNG TV-era rendition of the character. This version of  Worf comes with a phaser, phaser rifle, bat'leth, and an assortment of arms to hold them in a variety of poses. So he is *pun warning* certainly well armed... He also has the option of different hair styles, and a display base sporting the Klignon logo. More images after the jump, as well as updates on DST starship models:

Worf is the second TNG figure in the Star Trek Select range, following Captain Picard. They join the previous TOS releases, of Kirk and Khan, and Spock and the Horta. DST have yet to announce which characters will be coming next, but do seem to suggest in answers to Q and As they post, that the Star Trek Select range will be the main form of Star Trek action figures they release, so hopefully that means there will be more, at some point.

Also due for imminent release is the long awaited original configuration of the Excelsior class, the USS Excelsior NX-2000. Last time I reported on this I was anticipating release last November, so I guess a certain Scottish engineer's tinkering might have caused some delays in the launch! DST have released a new video to demonstrate the light and sound features on the model:

If you're not a fan of Captain Styles, this is the fifth variation of the Excelsior class DST have released, so you also have the option of Captain Sulu of the NCC-2000, or Captain Harriman of the USS Enterprise-B, both of which have also been offered in battle damagedvariants.

DST's plans for future ships are better known than their action figures. It was recently revealed they have an entirely new Romulan Bird of Prey on the way, and will also be re-issuing and updating the Enterprise NX-01 for the first time in about a decade. There are no dates for those yet, but also due out soon is their updated version of the USS Enterprise-A, and according to their most recent ship dates list they will also be re-releasing the HD version of the original USS Enterprise.

Book bits: New covers and blurbs for 2015 books, and more.

It's a big books news day, as Pocket Books have released blurbs for the last four novels of the publishing year, which include a Pike-era story, the next books in the Seekers and Titan series, and a blurb that is sure to make fans of the DS9 relaunch do back-flips and set off fireworks! Continue below for all those, and more. But first:

Coming in July is the first novella in a New Frontier ebook trilogy, by Peter David of course. Previously reported as being titled Return, StarTrek.com have now revealed a revised title, The Returned, and the cover and blurb for the first book in the series, which features an intriguing choice of ship given when this is taking place in the New Frontier continuity:

Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the U.S.S. Excalibur are back, picking up three months after the stunning events depicted in New Frontier: Blind Man’s Bluff. Calhoun's search of Xenex has failed to find any survivors, and now he is bound and determined to track down the race that killed them—the D'myurj and their associates, the Brethren--and exact vengeance upon them. His search will take the Excalibur crew into a pocket universe, where he discovers not only the homeworld of the D’myurj, but another race that shares Calhoun's determination to obliterate his opponents. But is this new race truly an ally…or an even greater threat?
Simon and Schuster tend to release their novel blurbs a third of a year at a time, so there latest updates give us summaries of the October to January books, the last four of the 2015 publishing schedule. All four are now available to pre-order, while the blurbs themselves are so far only found on Simon and Schuster's digital catalogue. Continue after the jump to check them out:

Coming in October in Sight Unseen, James Swallow's new Titan novel, which takes place after The Fall, and John Jackson Miller's recent crossover adventure, Takedown.
In the wake of political upheaval across the United Federation of Planets, Admiral William Riker and the crew of the U.S.S. Titan find themselves in uncertain waters as roles aboard the ship change to reflect a new mandate and a new mission. On orders from Starfleet, Titan sets out toward the edge of Federation space to tackle its latest assignment: to work with an alien species known as the Dinac, who are taking their first steps into the galaxy at large as a newly warp-capable civilization.

But when disaster befalls the Dinac, the Titan crew discovers they have unknowingly drawn the attention of a deadly, merciless enemy—a nightmare from Riker’s past lurking in the darkness. Friendships will be tested to the limit as familiar faces and new allies must risk everything in a fight against an unstoppable invader—or a horrific threat will be unleashed on the galaxy!

November's novel, is the fourth book in the Seekers series, the title of which is newly revealed as All That's Left. The series swings between authors and feature ships, so following David Mack's Long Shot in August, Seekers 4 brings us back to Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, for a new story featuring the USS Endeavour.
Initially charted by Starfleet probes dispatched to survey the Taurus Reach, the planet Cantrel V now plays host to a budding Federation colony as well as a combined civilian/Starfleet exploration team. Ancient ruins of an unknown civilization scattered around the planet have raised the curiosity of archeologists, anthropologists, historians, and other interested members of the Federation scientific community. Together, they are attempting to shed light on the beings who once called this world home.

After a large, unidentified vessel arrives in orbit and launches a seemingly unprovoked orbital bombardment, the U.S.S. Endeavour responds to the colony’s distress call. As they attempt to render assistance and investigate the mysterious ship, Captain Atish Khatami and her crew begin to unlock the astonishing secrets the planet has harbored for centuries. Does the survival of a newly discovered yet endangered alien race pose a threat not only to Cantrel V but other inhabited worlds throughout the Taurus Reach and beyond?

December takes us to the Pike-era, in Greg Cox's new book, Child of Two Worlds:
The year is 2255, not long after the events of the Original Series episode “The Cage.” A young Spock is science officer on the U.S.S.Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, when an outbreak of deadly Rigelian fever threatens the crew. Reviewing the Starfleet medical database, Dr. Phillip Boyce comes up with a highly experimental and untested new treatment that might save the crew. Just one problem: it requires a rare mineral substance, ryetalyn, which is not easily obtained…except on a remote alien colony near the Klingon border. But borders are somewhat blurry in this part of galaxy. Pike will need to tread carefully in order to avoid provoking an armed conflict with the Klingons—or starting an all-out war.

And finally, January picks up the DS9 story after David R. George III's Sacraments of Fire in July. The title, Ascendance, seemed a pretty big hint, and now this blurb confirms, we're finally filling the timeline gap in the DS9 relaunch!
On the original Deep Space Nine, Captain Kira Nerys watches as the nearby wormhole opens and discharges a single, bladelike vessel. Attempts to contact its crew fail, and the ship is soon followed by another vessel of similar design. When an armada subsequently begins to emerge from the wormhole, it seems clear that DS9 is under attack. Kira orders her first officer, Commander Elias Vaughn, to board the U.S.S. Defiant and defend the station, and alerts Starfleet to send additional forces as her crew prepares DS9’s shields and weaponry for the onslaught to come.

Meanwhile, on the lead ship, Iliana Ghemor considers launching an attack on DS9 and finally ending the life of Kira, the fountainhead of all the ills in her miserable life. Her vengeance demands more than mere death, though—it requires pain. Ghemor refocuses, choosing to follow her plan to mete out her revenge on the captain by first decimating the population of Bajor…

Exciting times ahead! And there's even more to come: In his latest round-up of writing projects, Dayton Ward revealed some more details about his forthcoming sequel to the excellent Star Trek exploration of UFOs, From History's Shadow:
More UFOs! More aliens! More time travel shenanigans! Unless something totally weird happens, this will be the novel I work on after I finish the 24 book and Seekers #4. As things stand now, I suspect this will be slated for publication in mid-late 2016, though that’s certainly subject to change. It’s too early to be offering much in the way of details, but I’ll hint now that this won’t be a direct sequel to the first book, either for Kirk and the gang or anybody in the 20th century….sorta.
In other books news, Cross Cult have released a new New Frontier character portrait. These images typically feature on the spines of the books, and Arex here is set to appear on the thirteenth book in their releases, Stein und Amboss, aka Stone and Anvil, which is due out in May.

It appears there is also a new non-fiction book on the way, one that we probably should have expected. There are ew details so far, but next January Little Brown will be publishingSet Phasers to Stun: 50 Years of Star Trek, by Marcus Berkmann.

Finally, if you enjoy your author commentaries, then Trek FM's Literary Treks have a couple of new interview episodes worth a listen: John Jackson Miller on Takedown, and Keith R.A. DeCandido on the TNG ebook series, Slings and Arrows.

Frisbee-Enterprise is real now! And other examples of ThinkGeek's diabolical genius

Cast your minds back to the 1st of April last year, a day when ThinkGeek repeats its annual custom of revealing to the world even crazier product ideas than they usually dream up, to bring joy and amusement to all. Well, they've only gone a made one of them real!

Available now, possibly one of the greatest Star Trek inventions from ThinkGeek ever, certainly one of the best USS Enterprise shaped things to have been created, the fully-functional flying-when-thrown, USS Enterprise flying disc!

ThinkGeek explain how they changed, complied-with, the laws of physics to make this work:
Each Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Flying Disc is pretty much just what it looks like. There's the saucer section (made of space-age plastic) which is the part you throw (just like a regular flying disc). But the Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Flying Disc also has the rest of the ship attached (made of foam). The saucer section spins freely, and the secondary hull actually stabilizes and flies behind it. The result? A U.S.S. Enterprise you can easily throw and catch.
And this is just the latest of several recent releases from ThinkGeek. Continue after the jump to see more of their new Star Trek creations:

The Enterprise features on all the latest releases, including these yoga pants (also suitable for frisbee?):

And finally, there's this ceramic travel mug featuring the Enterprise, some of the time at least, as the Enterprise blueprint appears when the mug is full of hot liquids.

Behind the scenes look at the Enterprise-E, Argo, Scorpion, and more

$

The physical model of the USS Enterprise-E made it's debut in First Contact, and then was never seen on-screen again, as subsequent films went fully CGI. Thanks to Prop Store we can drink in the details of that amazing model though, as photographed by one of the ILM crew members. Continue below for a few highlights, plus some other TNG movie era behind the scenes goodies, and visit Prop Store to check out the full gallery of photos of the Enterprise-E model.

You can see much more of the Enterprise-E over at Prop Store. Meanwhile Star Trek production artist, and designer of the E, John Eaves, set up a Facebook page a little while ago, and has shared some of his artwork and photos. For instance, a look at the Enterprise-E bridge, and how it was converted for use as the Valdore in Nemesis:

Eaves also posted some of his concept art for the Enterprise's shuttlecraft Argo, also seen in Nemesis:
The Argo times 2, Nemesis called for a double Argo so here is what was conceived, the Argo shuttle, and the Argo 4X4. the two vehicles were a unit and the design process was a lot of fun. This was probably my fav of all the trek shuttles that came a cross my desk and mainly because we figured out a way to have wings that did not have to retract into the body of the craft.. This outer hinging idea came from all the fold up wings on all of the carrier based planes from WWII, The Avenger and the Hellcat were the Two that provided the most inspiration and in the end this outer wing made for a very practical and elegant way to have wings.

And finally in this TNG behind the scene pick-and-mix Eaves has also posted lots of imagery looking at the creation of the Reman Scorpion fighters from Nemesis.
This is a small amount of the pix and art that went into the creation of the Ramen Scorpion fighter. This was a wickedly fun assignment to undertake and I worked with some remarkably talented folks with this one, Herman Zimmerman, Mike Okuda, Ron Namora, Bill Skinner, Anna Packard, Tom Arp, Dan Plan, Mike Mentzer, and the incredible Paramount pictures construction and FX crews. The Scorpion was actually the first full sized props to break the flat glass and pained window look. Jag was just about done and I found a bunch of F-18 canopies in the back of the FX shop, I told Herman about them and we decided to flip the canopies around and design the ship around the glass.

You'll find much more about the development of the Scorpion design on John Eaves' Facebook page, and there's more to see on all the links posted above. And for more still, check back through my "behind the scenes" label for all sorts of concept art, and looks at props, miniatures, sets, and more from across the franchise and various Star Trek media.

Gold Key Archives Volume 3 preview

Due out in about a month is the third book in the Gold Key Archives, IDW's remastered reprints of the first ever Star Trek comics. Volume Three includes issues thirteen to eighteen in the Gold Key series, Dark Traveler, The Enterprise Mutiny, Museum at the End of Time, Day of the Inquisitors, The Cosmic Cavemen, and The Hijacked Planet. All have been brought back to life more vividly than ever before, with new colouring, and presented in a hardcover book, with a beautiful new cover by Michael Stribling.

Amazon's look inside feature has now revealed several preview pages from the book, giving us a look a the first few pages from the remastered Dark Traveler. Continue after the jump to check that out, as well as a look at another vintage Star Trek comic.

In other vintage comics news, posting on the Hasslein Books blog, Star Trek comics collector Rich Handley revealed his discovery of a long lost obscure Star Trek comic released alongside The Motion Picture in 1979. Star Trek Adventure is a very basic comic strip, presented as a scroll on a toy called the Star Trek Space Viewer, one of many low cost toys released by Larami when the first Star Trek movie came out. Visit the Hasslein Books blog to find out more about this find, and see the full comic strip.

On that blog Handley, who helped bring about IDW's reprints of the rare American newspaper comic strips, when summing up his contributions to Trek comicdom, which also includes an essay in the excellent book New Life and New Civilizations: Exploring Star Trek Comics, cryptically remarked "there's more to come that hasn't yet been announced" - Hopefully that more to come is the reprint books of the old UK comic strips, which have so far evaded publication!

Warp speed chopsticks from ThinkGeek

Will ThinkGeek ever cease in turning the Enterprise into new things? I certainly hope not! Their latest creation is a USS Enterprise sushi set! The set features a rather snazzy stainless steel rendition of the Enterprise, the saucer of which opens up to function as a soy sauce dish. The blue warp streaks coming from the nacelles meanwhile are cunningly concealed translucent plastic chop sticks, ready to pluck sushi from the wooden board the Enterprise is mounted to.

Another of ThinkGeek's recent renditions of the Enterprise is their amazing flying disc, and they have now released a new video showing it in action (it flies surprisingly well!), continue after the jump to check that out:

This Month: March 2015 Star Trek releases

It's a good month for TOS fans, with books, DVDs, clothes, toys, and more inspired by the series spanning everything from the Pike era to The Motion Picture. And there's plenty to keep fans of other eras happy too in this bumper month of Star Trek releases. Continue after the jump to check out all the latest Star Trek stuff appearing this month.

Prose

It's a double prose month, with both a novel and ebook out. The first TOS novel of the year is Savage Trade, by Tony Daniel, the second Star Trek novel from the author following his 2013 book, Devil's Bargain. Here's the blurb for the five year mission story, and if you visit Amazon, you'll also be able to read an excerpt from chapter one.
The U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk is en route to the extreme edge of the Alpha Quadrant, and to a region known as the Vara Nebula. Its mission: to investigate why science outpost Zeta Gibraltar is not answering all Federation hailing messages. When the Enterprise arrives, a scan shows no life forms in the science station. Kirk leads a landing party and quickly discovers the reason for the strange silence—signs of a violent firefight are everywhere. Zeta Gibraltar has been completely raided. Yet there are no bodies and the entire roster of station personnel is missing…

Also out this month is the first novella of the year, a rare Motion Picture era story - set right after the movie in fact - from first time Star Trek writer, Scott Harrison. Shadow of the Machine has been a long time coming, the first news of it came way back in July 2013, when it was suggested it would have a release in December that year!
After its recent encounter with V’ger, the U.S.S. Enterprise has returned to dry dock to finish its refit before commencing its second five-year mission. The crew has been granted a two-week period of shore leave before preparations for their next voyage begins. Shaken by their encounter with V’ger, Kirk, Spock, and Sulu travel to their respective homes and must reflect upon their lives—now forever changed.

Both of these books are available already, and indeed it will only be a few days until April's novel, Christopher L. Bennett's Uncertain Logic, the latest in the Rise of the Federation series, will be hitting shelves.

Comics

It's a packed month for comics readers too, with three new titles out from IDW. In the nuTrek ongoing seriesissue forty-three is the start of a new three part story, Eurydice, which has the crew of the Enterprise visiting the Delta Quadrant! There were no Voyager cameos in this opening to the story, but IDW's Star Trek editor Sarah Gaydos did hint at something Voyager related coming this year in an interview recently, so surely this opportunity wont be missed? Mike Johnson wrote this issue, with Tony Sashteen returning for art duty. Here's the blurb, and you can read the first few pages in my preview article.
The lead-up to the next STAR TREK film continues here, in an all-new adventure produced in association with Roberto Orci! Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise find themselves in uncharted space on their Five Year Mission of exploration… but a new alien threat may end their journey prematurely!

After a hiccup in the bimonthly release pattern, we have the first 2015 issue in John Byrne's New Visions photo-comic series. A Scent of Ghosts guest stars Number One, now a Commodore, with this comic acting as a prequel of sorts to her role in Byrne's previous Romulan comics. While Number One gets to meet Kirk and crew, the other Pike era characters also pop up, as this story features both crews of the Enterprise. As ever there is also a short secondary story, Memoriam, which oddly enough is another Motion Picture era story. You can read preview pages from the main story in my earlier report, and a single page preview from Memoriam in another article.
John Byrne continues his new Star Trek photoplay adventures with “A Scent of Ghosts” and “Memoriam.” Past and Present collide, as the Enterprise takes aboard a special figure from Spock’s past, only to find themselves haunted by an mystery from years before. Plus, a sad farewell.

The final IDW release of the month, due out this week, is the penultimate issue in the five part TOS/Planet of the Apes crossover, The Primate Directive. Written by Scott and David Tipton, with art by Rachael Stott, the preview hasn't been released yet, but until then, here's the blurb:
An uneasy alliance has been forged between Captain Kirk and Colonel Taylor! But will it be enough to prevent Commander Kor and his Klingons from toppling the regime of Doctor Zaius?

Model ships

There's no shortage of ships this month either, with plenty of larger models joining the regular Eaglemoss and Attack Wing releases this month.

There are two issues in The Official Starships Collection out this month. Issue forty-one, the Klingon Raptor class is out in the UK already, and is a pleasingly solid model. While issue forty-two, the Olympic class USS Pasteur is due out this week. As ever these will follow in other markets around the world as the series catches up.

In February's This Month report I also suggested the fourth special issue in the series, the Klingon D4 class Bird of Prey, might have been released. Since then Eaglemoss have confirmed that will be coming in April. Check the Starships Collection index page for full coverage of everything from this series.

Wizkids'Attack Wing also delivers three new gaming miniatures this month. Wave thirteen includes the refit Constitution class mirror universe ship ISS Enterprise, Cardassian Galor class Reklar, and a Gorn ship - This will be the first retail model of the Gorn design, which appeared in the remastered version of Arena. Although the same model has been previously released in limited quantities as an organised play event prize.

Pinning down exactly when Diamond Select Toys will release things is never easy, but it seems reasonably likely that the USS Excelsior NX-2000, that's the version with sounds and configuration based on The Search For Spock, should finally be arriving this month. See my recent report for a video demonstrating all the light and sound features on this release.

The Undiscovered Country edition of the USS Enterprise-A might also be out this month, but some retailers are reporting later release dates for that now, so I'm erring on that not happening just yet.

If you want to build your own ship, then Round 2 Models have a new release waiting you, the 1:1000 scale TOS Romulan Bird of Prey. You can find images of a prototype of the model in an earlier report.

And finally, the wackiest model of the month comes from ThinkGeek, an April Fools joke turned real product, the USS Enterprise flying disc.

Figures

You could crew a starship with all the action figures and other character based releases this month!

New from DST is the fourth character in their seven-inch scale Star Trek Select range. Worf is presented in TNG TV era style, with lots of alternate arms and weapons to hold with them, plus a Klingon themed display stand. You can see lots of photos in my recent report on this figure.

Half the size of Worf, and decidedly more retro, the first wave of Funko's three-and-three-quarter inch Kenner-style ReAction figures are out now. Wave one includes Spock, Uhura, McCoy, and Sulu, and there are four more characters due in wave two later in the year.

Also freshly released by Funko are the TNG crew in Pop! vinyl form. Joining the previous TOS and The Big Bang Theory crossover characters, this new assortment includes Picard, Riker, Data, Worf, Troi, and La Forge, plus Locutus and a generic Klingon.

DST have their second bust bank out, Captain Kirk joins the Spock bank released last year.

And finally the first Star Trek Uglydolls are out too. Five Uglydoll characters have been reborn in Star Trek rolls, available as both plushes and smaller clip-ons. I like to imagine these are just an assortment of aliens in Starfleet, but officially they are: Wage as Captain Kirk, Ox as Spock, Ice-Bat as Scotty, Babo as Doctor McCoy, and Tray as Uhura.

Clothing and Props

ThinkGeek have brought Star Trek to yoga, with their new USS Enterprise yoga pants.

For more formal Star Trek attire, Anovos's Enterprise-era rank pips should be on the way this month.

And then there are some toy props which might be showing up soon, but probably not:  DST's Search For Spock phaser looks likely to now be coming out later in the year, and Forbidden Planet are still saying they will have chirping combadges by the end of the month - I wonder if they will actually appear this time!

Homewares

Another of ThinkGeek's amazing creations, the USS Enterprise sushi set, featuring an Enterprise shaped soy sauce saucer, with the warp effect nacelles being cunningly concealed chopsticks.

From DST there's the Borg Cube ice-cube mold, ready to make one-and-a-half inch miniature menaces in ice, chocolate, jelly, or whatever other form you can ease out of the six-sided silicone mold.

You can add a bit of colour to your newly minted ice-cubes by placing your glass on Westland Giftware's new lighted coasters. The four-pack of TOS character design ceramic coasters feature a built in colour-changing light feature!

And also ready for coaster application, there are a couple of new drinking vessels from Vandor; a twenty-four ounce acrylic travel cup featuring the Enterprise, and a twenty-ounce ceramic mug featuring a heat-reactive transporter room design.

Home Video

With the Star Trek bluray project on hold for the foreseeable future, we're back to home video offerings of the repackaged variety. Out this month is a new compilation set, the two disc Captain Kirk's Boldest Missions, which features eight episodes: The Corbomite Maneuver, The Conscience of the King, Balance of Terror, Space Seed, The City on the Edge of Forever, Mirror, Mirror, The Doomsday Machine, and Return to Tomorrow. There are also a few extra features, all previously released on the Fan Collective: Captain's Log set, from 2001.
Captain James Tiberius Kirk (William Shatner) steps squarely into the spotlight in this thrilling Star Trek collection that features his greatest interstellar adventures! And the commander of the star ship U.S.S. Enterprise finds a galaxy full of intriguing missions as he and his crew are destined to boldly go where no man has gone before. From an encounter with the mysterious Balok in The Corbomite Maneuver and attempting to rescue survivors from a planet-killing weapon from another galaxy in The Doomsday Machine to the critically acclaimed, Hugo Award-winning The City on the Edge of Forever, this collection of eight thrill-packed, heart-pounding adventures from the original Star Trek series will have you joining Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew as they soar off on exciting quests and unforgettable encounters.
Purchase: Amazon.com, Amazon.ca.

Foreign Language

And finally, Cross Cult always have something to offer German readers. This month's new novel is Unwürdig, Kirsten Beyer's 2009 Voyagernovel, originally known as Unworthy. And there's also a Corps of Engineers ebook novella, Der Außenposten, otherwise known as the 2001 US release,The Riddled Post, by Aaron Rosenberg.

And that, is all, for now. But there are almost always new bits and pieces announced throughout any given month, which I shall of course report on as they appear.

You can find out more about all these items, and everything else out this year, with links to all my previous coverage on my schedule page.

Starships Collection previews and updates: New pictures, more specials, and much more

Lots of news to from Eaglemoss'Official Starships Collection today, starting with the latest two issues to be solicited, the armoured USS Voyager, and the ECS Fortunate, which will be issues forty-eight and forty-nine, finding there way to the UK first in June, with the rest of the world to follow. Online retailers are now listing them, and in doing so revealed new photos of the models, and magazine covers, including the first look at what looks to be a very impressive model of the Fortunate:

Continue after the jump for more previews of forthcoming models, and lots of news of ships to come later in the series.

Another cover, for the previously solicited forty-sixth issue, the USS Enterprise-C, has also appeared online recently.

Meanwhile twitter has been a hive of news lately! The Collection's editor, Ben Robinson has set himself up with an account, and one of his first tweets was one of his desk photos, giving us the first ever look at models of the Steamrunner class, Saber class, and 23rd century Romulan Bird of Prey (see below)

In another tweet he also revealed Eaglemoss are working on more dedication plagues:
I have pictures of the Voyager plaque in my email waiting for approval and we've briefed out the Defiant plaque.

I'm not sure on the price, but around the price of UK specials. They''ll only be available to subscribers and in our e-shop.

And there's much more news than this. Prior to joining up himself, Ben recently ran a Twitter Q and A on The Collection's Twitter account, revealing all sorts of news of things to come in the series!

The Enterprise NX-01 refit, special #6
Perhaps the biggest revealed is that the Enterprise NX-01 refit has now been confirmed as the sixth special issue - Which hopefully means it will be a bigger model too!

Speaking of bigger models, one very interesting exchange raised the possibility of larger models of some of the other hero ships:
There are some issues to resolve but I think there's a lot to be said for bigger versions of some ships particularly the D and the E.
Quite a few ideas for specials were raised, as was the rationale for the run of nuTrek designs at the larger scale:
Because of the way our license works, all the JJ ships had to be done as specials. A lot of them are very desirable so they've taken the slots so far. There could be other specials...
Deep Space Station K-7 coming later?
Several starbases were requested, and it sounds like Deep Space Station K-7 continues to be the front runner for special treatment, while Starbase 375 and Earth Spacedock were also not ruled out.

Drydock models were also requested, talking about a Galaxy class under construction idea:
It would have to be big and special. I'd love to do something like that though. It will take a bit of work and there are licensing issues that we'd have to resolve.
And in a similar vein, The Motion Picture era dock:
I think we'd have to do it with a ship in it. I'm tempted by a partially converted TMP refit in space dock....
The idea of customised ships was also brought up, and while discussing that a mirror universe ISS Enterprise was confirmed!
I've often wondered if people would be interested in this. We could theoretically offer a service where you chose your own registry. But I guess it would be quite expensive.

I'll tell you what we are are doing. It's the first time I've announced this anywhere... the Mirror Universe 1701. I'm excited by that.
Many regular ships were re-confirmed, including all the First Contact ships, the Enteprise-J, and Romulan shuttle (which we've seen the new CGI model of already). The Breen are also confirmed:
I had two ships I really wanted to do when we started – the Breen warship and the Fesarius. Thanks to David Lombardi I've been able to get the Breen warship into the hopper. I still haven't got to the Fesarius...
Which Wolf 359 wrecks will be brought back into service?
With most of the CGI-era Federation ships now released or coming soon, there is a lot of interest in other Starfleet ships to continue to build up the fleet, and gladly Ben seems very open to that:
I am very keen to do as many Fed starships as possible, we're getting close to a full set... There's still the debris field from Wolf 359 to explore and some interesting Nebula and Miranda class variants.
When asked specifically about the Curry, Freedom, Yeager and New Orleans classes:
I'm just looking at the list for 75 to 90 and these are very high on my agenda.
He also gave positive responses to suggestions of the New Orleans and Cheyenne classes, and even suggested the Wambundu class himself!

The possibility of the Daedalus meanwhile seems a bit more distant:
It's not the ref so much as the fact that it's never been seen on screen. Sisko's model is quite basic when you see it. I admit to being tempted. This is kind of a phase-2 ship. It's definitely canon but we don't really know what they looked like in any real detail. I'm wary of making too much up! There are other ships like the Matt Jefferies' 1970s Enterprise, and the concept from the abandoned 'Planet of the Titans' movie.
Hope for the Merchantman
There were quite a few people asking about freighters and some of the other less glamorous designs, and there's hope for fans of those ships too:
I have beautiful reference photography for the Merchantman. I hadn't thought about that for a while. I think we should do it, don't you? And the Batris made so many appearances in one form or another that I think it has to be done.
He also seems quite keen to do the smuggler's ship from Unification, and also suggested Gomtuu as likely to come before a Tamarian ship when asked about that.

When asked about the possibility of the Scimitar he raised the challenge of modelling all the antennae, while the Son'a offer their own problems:
I'm working on this at the moment. It's tricky because the company that made the CG - Santa Barbara Studios - didn't archive them and used their own software. Nothing is impossible though and I do have perfect reference.
He also confirmed the Enterprise-A is getting a paint-job upgrade compared to the existing refit Enterprise model, and had this to say about the Japanese Borg Cube getting a wider release:
It's not impossible but I have my own plans for Borg cubes...
Talking of ships from foreign lands, it seems there is hope for those of us not in Germany or France who want those shuttle models:
I can't tell you exactly how, but yes. We will find a way of doing them. It's unlikely that they'll be sold the same way as in Germany. But we get that people want them!
Ben also spoke a bit more generally about the series, confirming several times there is every chance of continuing beyond the currently planned ninety issues, if people keep buying. He also gave some insight into how he selects ships:
I try to balance Fed and non-Fed and the different series as much as possible. It's also a case of what reference I can find easily. There is an excellent archive of ships from Voyager and Enterprise. Less so with the other shows.
Eaglemoss run many other part-work collections, including figurines for various other franchises such as Doctor Who and several comic book series. When asked about the possibility of a Star Trek figurine collection:
We do talk about it. There are various reasons I don't think it's ideal but maybe a smaller collection of larger figurines.
Finally, all the usual non-canon favourites were requested; the Titan, Aventine, Enterprise-F, and other Star Trek Online ships. Ben reiterated his position on those:
It's not a priority... unless I'm confident I can sell at least 5,000, which is what the petition is all about.
The Titan petition is still getting new supporters every day, now over 65% of the way to the five-thousand name goal. So please, if you want a Titan, sign up! And share with other people who might want one too!

Also while I think we will have more luck by focusing campaigning on one non-canon ship at a time, I do get a lot of requests for an Aventine petition too, so I've relented and set one up! Perhaps support for the Aventine and Titan can reinforce each other and get us both ships sooner rather than later! Bring on the Destiny fleet!

You can read the full transcript of Ben's Q and A on Eaglemoss' Hero Collector site.
